Arriving and airport services
Hotels at airports and stations: when a room next door makes sense
Should I sleep near the airport or station, and what should I check?

In short
A hotel at or near an airport or station saves time before an early departure and after a late arrival. It is worth it when the alternative is a long transfer in the night, less so when the airport hotel is a shuttle ride from the terminal and the city is close.
Check the practical distance — walking, shuttle or taxi — the hours the reception and shuttle run, and whether the room can be used for a few hours on a long layover.
When it helps
- An early departure that starts before public transport runs.
- A late arrival, or a delay that leaves you stranded overnight — see the flight disruption guides for what an airline must provide.
- A layover long enough to rest but not to go into the city.
What to check
- Distance and how you get there: inside the terminal, a short walk, or a shuttle — and its operating hours.
- Reception hours and late check-in arrangements.
- Whether it is inside the security area (rare, and usually needs a boarding pass) or outside it.
- Day-use options and minimum stay for layovers.
- Cancellation terms, especially for flights that may be disrupted.
- Noise: airports and stations are busy; check the room’s position and window quality.
Airports and stations differ
Our transport catalogue lists airports, stations and ports across 28 countries and how each connects to nearby cities. Use it to judge whether staying in the nearest city is easier than a hotel at the transport hub — for instance when a fast rail link runs into the centre.
Check before you buy
- Compare the hotel’s real distance and shuttle hours with your departure time.
- Check the reception hours for a late arrival.
- Read the cancellation terms — particularly for disruption-prone flights.
- For a layover, ask whether day-use rooms are offered and their time blocks.
