Airport lounges: what you get and when it is worth it

Is an airport lounge worth using for my connection or wait, and how do I get in?

On this page

In short

A lounge is a quiet, seated area airside with food, drinks and Wi-Fi. Access comes from your ticket class or status, from a card or membership programme, or by paying for a single visit — and each route has different conditions.

Where you depart from matters: many airports separate Schengen and non-Schengen departures, and a lounge sits on one side of that line. If your flight leaves from the other side, the lounge you booked may not be reachable.

Ways in

  • Ticket or status: some fares and loyalty tiers include access to the airline’s own lounge or a partner’s.
  • Cards and memberships: some include a set number of visits; check whether a guest counts as a visit and whether the programme includes the lounge at your airport.
  • Pay per visit: independent lounges may sell a time-limited entry; check the time limit and whether it can be shortened by a delayed flight.

Terminal, zone and time

Lounges are almost always after security. At an airport that splits departures between Schengen and non-Schengen flights, or between terminals, confirm which side the lounge is on and whether your departure gate is reachable from it — and how long it takes.

Opening hours matter for early and late flights, and some lounges limit stays to a few hours or refuse entry when full. A lounge is not a substitute for arriving in time for your boarding: watch the boarding time, not the lounge clock.

Is it worth it?

A lounge helps most on long layovers and early departures. On a short connection between adjacent gates, the time spent walking to a lounge can eat the benefit. If a meal, a shower or a quiet workspace is the reason, compare it with what the terminal offers without paying.

Check before you buy

  • Confirm the lounge’s terminal, zone and opening hours for your departure.
  • Check the time limit and whether guests are allowed.
  • Note the entry conditions (boarding pass, card, ID) and what is included.
  • Set a reminder for boarding time when you go in.
