Rail passes and regional tickets: when they beat point-to-point fares
Would a rail pass save me effort or money compared with separate tickets?

In short
A rail pass covers many journeys for a fixed period or number of travel days. It suits a route with several long trips; a handful of point-to-point journeys booked in advance can be simpler and cheaper. The right answer depends on how many days you travel, which trains you need and whether they require reservations.
Eligibility and terms are set by the pass provider and often depend on where you live; prices and inclusions change, so we show none. Start by listing your journeys and their published operators and times.
Kinds of pass
- Multi-country passes: valid on participating operators across several countries; usually a set number of travel days within a validity window, or continuous travel for a period.
- National passes: valid across one country’s network, sometimes excluding some services.
- Regional and day tickets: cover a region or a zone for a day or a weekend; often the best value for local trips.
How to decide
- List each journey on your plan with the operator and the train type.
- Note which need a seat reservation or supplement even with a pass — high-speed and night services commonly do.
- Count travel days, not journeys: a travel-day pass usually allows several trains on the same day.
- Compare the pass with the actual cost of the individual tickets you would buy, at the price they have when you book.
Our transport pages show published journey times and named operators for train, coach and ferry connections between cities, airports and stations, which helps you list realistic journeys before deciding.
Check before you buy
- Check who is eligible for the pass, based on where you live.
- Find out which services need reservations and what they cost.
- Count travel days against your real plan.
- Check the pass’s validity rules and any activation deadline.
