City passes and transport cards: which kind fits your visit

Should I buy a city pass or a transport card, and what should I check?

On this page

In short

Three products are sold under similar names: an attraction pass (entry to a list of sights), a transit card or ticket (rides on local public transport) and a combined tourist card that bundles the two. They suit different visits, and the right choice depends on what you will actually do.

Count the sights you would visit anyway, and the rides you would take, before comparing with a pass. Prices are set by each city and change, so we show none; check the official city page for the current terms.

The three kinds

  • Attraction pass: entry to museums and sights on a list, sometimes with skip-the-line access; validity may be consecutive days or any days within a window.
  • Transit ticket or card: rides on local buses, trams and metro, often for 24 hours, several days or a number of trips, and sometimes valid only in one fare zone.
  • Tourist card: both together; check what is bundled and what is not.

What to check

  • The exact list of attractions and any entries limited to one visit each.
  • Whether timed-entry attractions need a separate reservation even with a pass.
  • How validity is counted — from first use, or calendar days — and the last day you can activate it.
  • Which fare zones or lines a transit product covers, and whether it includes the airport link.
  • Whether some cities accept contactless bank cards or apps instead, which can make a separate ticket unnecessary — check the transit operator’s page.

It depends on the city

Local products differ from city to city, and we do not generate a page for every combination. Our transport catalogue shows how each of 341 cities connects to airports, stations and neighbouring cities — start there to plan the ride, and consult the city’s official tourism and transit pages for the pass itself.

Check before you buy

  • List the sights you would visit and compare with the pass’s list.
  • Check reservation requirements for timed-entry sights.
  • Read how validity counts days and when it must be activated.
  • Check the transit product’s zones, including the airport.
