Tours and attractions: what to check before you book with a provider
How do I choose a tour or attraction ticket safely and know what I am getting?
On this page
In short
A tour or attraction ticket is a promise about time, place, language and group size. Before you pay a provider, check who actually runs the activity, what is included, the cancellation and weather terms, and the meeting point.
If a provider sells you a combination — for example a tour plus accommodation or transport as one trip — it may be a ‘package’ under EU law, which carries extra protections; ask how the provider classifies it.
Who runs it
Some listings are sold by the operator, others by an intermediary who resells another company’s tour. The terms that matter — cancellation, refund, complaints — are usually the operator’s or the reseller’s; find out which. Look for the operator’s name, a physical meeting point and a contact that works on the day.
Conditions that decide the outcome
- Timed entry and arrival cut-offs: late arrival often means no entry and no refund.
- Cancellation and rebooking terms, including for bad weather or too few participants.
- Language of the guide, group size and length, and what is included (entry fees, transport, food).
- Accessibility: steps, distances, mobility support and age limits.
- Whether the ticket is transferable and what ID is asked for on the day.
The European Commission describes a package as a combination of at least two different types of travel service — such as transport, accommodation, car rental or other services like guided tours — as part of the same trip, generally bought from a single point of sale, with increased protection for travellers if the organiser becomes insolvent. A standalone entry ticket is not that; a bundle may be. Ask which it is.
Check before you buy
- Find the operator’s name and the meeting point.
- Read the cancellation, weather and minimum-group terms.
- Check the arrival cut-off and timed-entry rules.
- Ask whether a bundle is sold as a package.
