Luggage storage: leaving bags between check-out and departure

I have hours to fill and bags to carry — where can I leave them, and what should I check?

On this page

In short

Bag storage comes in three forms: lockers you operate yourself, staffed left-luggage counters, and independent storage points in shops or hotels. They differ in size limits, security checks, opening hours and how much the operator is liable for a lost item.

The failure to avoid is a storage point that closes before your train or flight. Compare opening hours with your departure, not with the time you drop the bag.

Lockers, counters and independent points

  • Lockers: self-service, often at stations and airports; the risk is size — a large suitcase may not fit any of them.
  • Staffed left-luggage counters: usually at major stations and airports; security screening of bags is common, and queues appear at busy hours.
  • Independent storage points (shops, cafés, hotels that store bags for non-guests): often closer to the city centre; conditions and insurance vary widely and are set by each operator.

Conditions that decide whether it works

  • Maximum size and weight per bag, and how many bags are accepted.
  • Opening and last drop-off/collection times against your onward journey — including a delayed train that gets you back later than planned.
  • What ID you must show, and whether someone else can collect the bag.
  • What may not be stored (valuables, food, batteries, liquids) and the operator’s liability limit if a bag is lost.
  • Whether storage is charged by the hour or the day, and what happens if you return late — check the terms, not just the headline rate.

Stations and airports differ

Not every station or airport offers storage, and where it exists it may be inside a secured area or a walk from the platform. Use the destination pages in our transport catalogue to see how a station or airport connects to the city centre before deciding where to leave the bags — a storage point in the centre is only useful if you can get to and from it in the time you have.

Check before you buy

  • Check the storage point’s opening hours against your departure time, with a buffer for delays.
  • Measure your largest bag against the stated size limit.
  • Keep valuables, medication and travel documents with you.
  • Photograph your bags and the ticket or receipt you are given.
  • Read the liability limit and the terms for late collection.
