Before you land

The parts people get wrong. Each one links to where we checked it.

  • Hours

The Airport Express runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year — every 15 to 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:30, and every 35 minutes overnight. It is the only public transport into Madrid when the metro is shut.

  • Fixed fare

The metro fare to or from the airport is not the ordinary zone A fare. A €3 airport supplement is charged on top, and anyone holding a zone A single, a Metrobús ten-trip pass or a combined single has to pay it to get on or off at either airport station.

  • Easy to get wrong

The two rail options do not serve the same terminals. Metro line 8 has a station at T1-T2-T3 and another at T4; the Cercanías C-1 stops at T4 and nowhere else, so from T1, T2 or T3 it means taking the inter-terminal shuttle first.

  • Easy to get wrong

The metro single ticket and the airport supplement are valid only on the day they are bought, and "the day" ends when the service does rather than at midnight. Buying them the night before does not work — the barriers reject them.

  • Easy to get wrong

The journey time depends on which terminal you board at: 30 minutes from T1, 35 from T2 and 40 from T4, all to Atocha.

  • Tickets

The flat €5 fare is paid to the driver in cash, by bank card or by phone, with no surcharge — but the driver will not change a note larger than €20.

  • Tickets

The Cercanías ticket is valid for one journey within two hours of being issued, and the train is free for passengers holding an AVE ticket that connects with a flight.

  • Easy to get wrong

A Tourist Ticket covering zone T is not valid on this bus, even though it covers the metro to the airport including the supplement.

  • Tickets

The Tourist Ticket is the one exception to the metro supplement — it covers the airport without paying it. It is not valid on the Airport Express bus, which is a separate product.
